Item Investigating Learning/Teaching Challenges in EFL Classes At Algerian primary school - Mecheria -(centre universitaire Salhi Ahmed Naama, 2024) Manel ARBAOUI; Asmaa TADJThis study aimed to explore primary school teachers‟ perceptions of the challenges they encountered while teaching English in Mecheria, Naama-Algeria. In light of this, we hypothesized that these challenges may vary between pupils and teachers, such as time management, suitable materials, qualified teachers, a supportive environment, and others. We also hypothesized that teachers‟ role is important in overcoming the challenges or difficulties faced in classes; they may use audiovisual devices, time-managing techniques, motivational tasks, exemplification, and other strategies. To achieve the above objective, we conducted a semi-structured interview with eight teachers, submitted a questionnaire to two other teachers, and conducted a classroom observation. The results revealed that managing time and overcrowded classrooms, lack of experience, and insufficient materials were the main issues found in primary education. Therefore, this supported our initial hypothesis that there are a variety of challenges facing both pupils and teachers. Moreover, the findings showed that teachers play a significant role in reducing those challenges by using various materials, strategies, and tasks. This helped us accept our second hypothesis. In conclusion, teaching the English language in primary schools is full of problems, but the teacher is the only person capable of overcoming them.
